The multivariate Beveridge–Nelson decomposition with I(1) and I(2) series

چکیده
The consumption Euler equation implies that the output growth rate and the real interest rate are of the same order of integration; i.e., if the real interest rate is I(1), then so is the output growth rate and hence log output is I(2). To estimate the natural rates and gaps of macroeconomic variables jointly, this paper develops the multivariate Beveridge–Nelson decomposition with I(1) and I(2) series. The paper applies the method to Japanese data during 1980Q1–2013Q3 to estimate the natural rates and gaps of output, inflation, interest, and unemployment jointly. JEL classification: C32, C82, E32

The Multistep Beveridge-Nelson Decomposition
The Beveridge-Nelson decomposition defines the trend component in terms of the eventual forecast function, as the value the series would take if it were on its long-run path. The paper introduces the multistep Beveridge-Nelson decomposition, which arises when the forecast function is obtained by the direct autoregressive approach, which optimizes the predictive ability of the AR model at foreca...
متن کاملThe Two Interpretations of the Beveridge–nelson Decomposition
The Beveridge–Nelson decomposition calculates trend and cycle for an integrated time series. However, there are two ways to interpret the results from the decomposition. One interpretation is that the optimal long-run forecast (minus any deterministic drift) used to calculate the Beveridge–Nelson trend corresponds to an estimate of an unobserved permanent component. The other interpretation is ...

1 Trend and Cycle Decomposition y t = t + t where y t is an n 1 vector and t and t represent trend and cycle components respectively. This decomposition into components is not unique. Beveridge and Nelson (1981) and Stock and Watson (1988) derive the following decomposition: y t = C(L)" t = C(1)" t + (1 L)C (L)" t Integrating up gives: y t = C(1) 1 X i=0 " ti | {z } + C (L)" t | {z } trend cycl...

متن کاملBusiness Cycles and Remittances: Can the Beveridge-Nelson Decomposition Provide New Evidence? - Dallas Fed
In this paper, I analyze the business cycle properties of remittances and output series for three pairs of countries: the United States–Mexico, the United States–El Salvador, and Germany–Turkey. Using an unobserved components state-space model (via the BeveridgeNelson decomposition), I decompose the remittances and output series into stochastic permanent and cyclical components. I then use the ...
